Scammer Posing as Deputy to Ask for Money

"crime genericRichland County, SC (WLTX) - The Richland County sheriff is warning the public about a scam artist who's posing as one of their officers.

Sheriff Leon Lott says the person, who pretends to be a lieutenant with his agency, is calling people telling them they were captured on camera running a red light. The scammer explains to the victims that they didn't show up for their court date, and that a bench warrant has been issued for them.

And that's the point where the man makes his pitch for money, Lott says. The person tells the victim to put $2,500 on a Green Dot card to pay a bond, then asks the victim to give him the PIN numbers on the back of the card.

Sheriff Lott says he wants everyone to understand that his office would not make this type of call or ask people to send in money.
