Suspects in $100,000 Jewelry Heist Arrested

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Two suspects in the theft of $100,000 worth of items from a local jewelry store have been arrested.

Columbia police say Robert Antoine Weathers, 53, and Robin Tracy Nelson, 50, were arrested in Catonsville, Maryland after someone called in a tip to police in Baltimore County.

Back on June 14th, officers say Weathers, Nelson, and at least two other unidentified suspects walked into Moseley's jewelry store on Broad River Road. Most of the suspects pretended to be customers, which police say distracted store employees. While the staff was busy, police say Weathers went into a restricted area where an open safe was located. Officers say he then slipped a tray full of diamonds into his suit jacket, then left the store with the other suspects.

Officers say Weathers and Nelson are wanted in Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania on similar charges. Law enforcement believes the group targets small, independent jewelry stores, and may have stolen between $3500-500,000 worth of jewels and money.

Columbia police are working to extradite Weathers and Nelson back to Columbia.
