Kershaw County, SC (WLTX) - Kershaw County deputies have identified the woman found dead in a wooded area near Elgin Wednesday afternoon.
Officers say the victim is 18-year-old Briana Nicole Rabon. Officers say she was murdered, but have not said how she died.
A group of children playing in an area off Haigs Creek North found the body. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says the girl's driver's license was found near her body, but a positive identification was not made until late Wednesday night.
Investigators say they found the girl's car at the Waffle House located on U.S. 601 and Interstate 20. Deputies and State Law Enforcement Division agents processed it for evidence.
"At the present time we have some very strong leads that we are working and we have gathered considerable evidence," Matthews says about the investigation. "Although one can ever say with certainty that we will solve this horrible crime quickly, I feel very confident that we are moving in the right direction."
Kershaw schools officials tell News19 Rabon was a 2013 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School. Counselors are on hand at the school Thursday to help students deal with the death.
"The Lugoff-Elgin High School family is saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our former students," said Lugoff-Elgin Principal Tommy Gladden in a statement. "Our sincere condolences are extended to Briana's family during this time of grief. We will continue to remember them in our thoughts and prayers."
