Liquor Store Owner Failed to Report $1.2 Million in Sales, State Says

Anderson, SC (WLTX) - An Anderson liquor store owner is accused of not reporting $1.2 million in sales to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Jonathan Martin (44) is charged with two counts of tax evasion. The DOR says Martin owns Palmetto Spirits and Palmetto Liquors in Anderson.

According to the DOR, Martin files state sales tax returns claiming a total of $3,654,478 in sales for tax years of 2013 and 2014. Investigators say those figures should have added up to $4,918,089. DOR investigators say the difference in sales numbers meant Martin evaded paying $75,817 in sales tax to the state.

If convicted, Martin could be fined up to $10,000 and/or sentenced up to 5 years in prison per charge.
