UNION, SC (WLTX) - A Union County man reported as missing on Monday has been charged with filing a false report, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.
Kelvin Jerome Durham, 24, is charged with filing a false report of a felony violation.
Deputies say Durham falsely reported being kidnapped on July 30 and July 31, Durham told deputies he had been kidnapped at gunpoint from the 2300 block of Cross Keys Highway, held against his will and escaped his capture while on Old Buncombe Road, according to investigators.
Investigators did not reveal a motive.
Authorities had been looking for Durham, who disappeared a day after "I will kill you" was allegedly spray painted on his home.
Union County deputies said Durham called 911 around 9 p.m. Sunday and told the operator he was being chased. But deputies say the call dropped before he could give more information and he hadn't been heard from since.
Authorities said the day before, Durham's family reported the spray painted threat, and Durham had recently been hit by a car that drove off while out walking.
Deputies told media outlets Monday they found Durham's BMW abandoned near where he made the 911 call on state Highway 49 near Union, but did not find him.
Late Monday evening, deputies reported that Durham had been found safe.
In a brief statement Monday evening, the Union County Sheriff's Office said Durham had been found safe and was being interviewed by investigators.
