Officers: Men Damaged Soccer Field with Backhoe

Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies arrested two men they say stole equipment and damaged a soccer field near Irmo.

Officers have charged 20-year-old Dylan Bridger Bennett and 27-year-old Matthew C. Downs with grand larceny, malicious injury to property, and criminal conspiracy.

On Sunday, officers say Bennett and Downs broke into a fenced maintenance area at the Seven Oak Pare on Leisure Lane. Officers say the men took a golf cart, then entered a nearby fenced construction area. Once they were inside there, deputies say the suspects hotwired a front-end loader and backhoe.

Investigators say the men they drove the equipment through a fence to a nearby soccer field, then dug holes in the field and scraped up grass turf.

Officers got a call about the incident as it was happening, and a responding officer found Bennett walking out of the woods near the park. Another officer found Downs a short distance away.

When deputies searched the property, they say they found the backhoe parked in a goal on the field with a bicycle rack underneath it.
