Indiana Police Officer Shot Dead While Responding to Traffic Crash

INDIANAPOLIS - A police lieutenant in suburban Indianapolis who was shot multiple times Thursday after responding to a car crash has died.

Southport Police Chief Thomas Vaughn said Lt. Aaron Allan was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at Eskenazi Hospital.

Allan apparently was responding to a car accident involving a flipped vehicle before 3 p.m. when shortly he was shot multiple times near Southport.

Dispatchers said Allan was rushed to Eskenazi. What precipitated the shooting was unclear.

Authorities said that at least two suspects have been taken into custody. After Allan was taken from the scene by ambulance, a second person with unknown injuries was also taken to the hospital. It was unclear if that person was also a suspect.

The shooting followed a single-vehicle crash around 2:15 p.m. that involved the suspects' vehicle flipping onto its roof.

A witness told WTHR that after the crash officers approached the car to help one of the occupants who appeared to have a leg injury. Suddenly, the person jumped up and began firing a gun at police.

Allan went down, and people nearby rushed to help, the witness told WTHR.

After the shooting, dozens of police cars lined the streets and neighbors stood outside to get a glimpse of what was going on.

Yellow police tape stretched across the road and surrounded the front lawn where the overturned vehicle came to rest.

Resident Tina Tom said a neighbor knocked on her door and told her to stay inside her home because an officer had been shot.

"I had goosebumps all over my face and my whole body," she said.

Betty Strohm, who once lived in the house near where the car is overturned, called the shooting "devastating." She added that many officers live in the area.

"I'm just absolutely sick. ... This is a great neighborhood. Everybody watches out for everybody here," Strohm said. "This never should happen to any police officer."

The Southport Police Department is a force of about 30 officers who are unpaid volunteers. Southport is a city in southern Marion County with a population of about 1,700 people.
