South Carolina Parents Accused of Neglecting 7-Month-Old

Parents of a 7-month-old have been arrested for child neglect in Kershaw County.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say the parents of a 7-month-old South Carolina child are accused of neglect.

The State Law Enforcement Division says 22-year-old Elizabeth Jade Napper and 32-year-old Jonathan Daniel Smith are each charged with legal custodian, unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person. The charge, which is a felony, carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine at the discretion of the court, or both.

A news release from SLED said the child had untreated injuries.

An arrest warrant says the injuries occurred throughout the child's life, adding that the child has been placed into emergency protective custody.

Napper and Smith have been booked at the Kershaw County Detention Center. It's not known if the couple has attorneys.
