MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) -- Police are looking for a Berkeley County jail inmate who escaped from custody.

Sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon says 39-year-old James A. Sanders of Ridgeville was sentenced to time served in jail for a restraining order violation on Thursday afternoon in Moncks Corner and was to go back to jail to await a hearing on a criminal domestic violence charge when he escaped.

Moon says the details on how Sanders escaped are still under investigation. Moon says officers took the inmate's girlfriend into protective custody while they look for Sanders.

Officials got a tip that Sanders flagged down a motorist Thursday evening and got a ride to Charleston.
