Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police say they found the car of missing lobbyist Tom Sponseller, and at this point in the investigation, they can't rule out foul play.

Sponseller, 61, hasn't been seen since around noon Saturday.

He was reported missing by a family member after he didn't answer his cell phone multiple times. Sponseller, who's the president of the South Carolina Hospitality Association, had been working at an office on Lady Street in downtown Columbia earlier in the day.

Police say they found his car outside where he works.

"We're not taking chances we're not willing to say let's wait 48 hours let's wait 72 hours and we generally don't," said Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott.

A report filed with the Columbia Police Department says Sponseller has no history of this type of incident.

Scott says investigators are looking into credit card usage and cameras downtown.

"I know that investigators last night were canvasing to see if any of the individual businesses have cameras in that area. I can tell you I just spoke to one of the business leaders and they are searching to see," said Scott.

The Hospitality Association released a statement Monday which said in part, "Tom has served as President and CEO of the South Carolina Hospitality Association for nearly 22 years.  He is a prominent hospitality industry leader here in our state as well as nationally. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family and friends."

Lawmakers at the have reacted as well, with some calling Sponseller a straight-forward person who is good at his job.

"Just a heck of a nice guy," said Richland County Senator John Courson. "I pray that he is in good health and that he will return to his family very soon."

"We're just all hoping and praying that he's okay I intend to ask for a moment of silence in the Senate when we reconvene," said Senator Joel Lourie, who also represents Richland County.

Sponseller's family has set up a Facebook page as they look for any clues into his disappearance.

Sponseller is 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has gray/white hair, hazel eyes, and wears glasses.
