ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - Law enforcement officers have recaptured an inmate who escaped from a medium-security state prison in Sumter County over the weekend.

South Carolina Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom says 34-year-old Andrew McElrath was captured in Anderson County at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

McElrath had been on the run since Saturday when he turned up missing at the Wateree Correctional Institution during an inmate count around 4:30 p.m.

McElrath has served about three months of a 15-month sentence for unauthorized use of a vehicle out of Anderson County.

Newsome says officers searching for McElrath felt that he might be headed back to Anderson County, which is where he is from.

Officials are still trying to figure out how McElrath got out of the prison near Rembert.
