Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said his officers shot a suspect Monday who they say had just robbed a Dollar General store.
The incident began around 4:00 p.m. with a holdup at the Dollar General on Taylor Street, Scott said.
Scott has identified the suspect as 46-year-old Gregory Johnston.
According to police, the man got money from the store and took off. There was a brief chase, and the suspect was located at the corner of Gervais and Laurens Street by two officers.
Scott says the officers ordered Johnston to stop several times, but he refused. Scott says when the man reached toward his pocket, the officers fired at the suspect, wounding him.
Paramedics took Johnston to the hospital. The officers were not physically hurt.
Scott said Johnston has prior arrests, and had just been released from prison 17 days ago on a strong armed robbery conviction.
As is standard procedure in cases such as these, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. The officers are on administrative leave with pay.
