COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - Some Midlands groups have partnered up to make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy Monday's total solar eclipse.

United Way of the Midlands and their partner agencies have partnered with the City of Columbia to give free pairs of eclipse glasses to the homeless.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime. I think everyone deserves the chance to witness something as great as a solar eclipse,” explained Karina Henry with United Way of the Midlands.

Henry said they are working to pass out 250 pairs of the special glasses throughout the Midlands.

“We have outreach workers who go into the community to engage individuals who may be in Finlay Park or at the bus stops, and they’re giving out the solar eclipse glasses,” she said. “It’s not just for safety purposes but it’s also an engagement tool to get people to the resources and the services they need.”
