Preps for Eclipse Underway, International Visitors Expected

Just a month away from the total solar eclipse. Up to a million visitors are expected to be in the area to witness the event.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - We are one month away from the total solar eclipse. One million people are estimated to come to our state many of them from out of state and out of the country.

“From as far away as California to Maine, to Washington,” Merritt McNeely with the South Carolina State Museum and the Total Eclipse Weekend Columbia SC Campaign explained.

McNeely said folks from Italy, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Hong Kong, which is more than 8,000 miles away.

They are coming to one of the best spots to see the moon’s shadow.

In Columbia, it's estimated to be two minutes and 36 seconds of darkness.

“It’s eye opening but we did know that people will travel internationally,” the Total Eclipse Weekend Columbia SC Campaign chair explained. “It definitely paid off because they’re coming here in droves.”

She also said that their Monday event is sold out with 35 percent of sales from people outside of the state and 10 percent of the sales from people who live out of the country.

“We will all see way more tourists and more international and national visitors than we see for any other event that we do,” McNeely said passionately. “This is an opportunity to really showcase Columbia and what we have to offer to people who have never been here before.”
