Volunteers Needed For Newberry Eclipsefest

With more than one million people expected to come to our state for the eclipse...some areas are in search of volunteers.

Newberry County, SC (WLTX) - You could see the excitement on Mickey Suber's face as he sat in the Ritz Theater along Main Street in Newberry.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that you can't miss," Suber said.

He was learning more about the total eclipse happening on August 21.

"Everybody is getting involved, so I'm excited about it," he said.

"We're going to have a merchandise store and really more information center, so people need to come and be friendly with folks and talk with them and do that," Heather Hawkins said.

Hawkins is in charge of the volunteer efforts for the four day "Eclipsefest" and said there's no limit to the volunteers they'll accept.

"We're going to have several different hands on opportunities that we will need to man that will be led by educators that we now need some assistance. And we'll also have the opportunity for people to just move boxes around. (It's) the grunt work, but it's the really important work as well," she said.

Wylene Smith and Marcelle Ackerman were also in the crowd.

"It's exciting whenever it happens and it goes dark and gets cool," Ackerman said.

Smith said they'll be enjoying the event from Ackerman's front yard.

"With a cool seat and a cool Coca-Cola," she said as the two laughed.

And everyone, including Suber now know how they can help.

"It's one of those experiences that you really can't miss and I'm really happy Newberry is going to be doing something," he said.
