Edgefield County Reacts to 4.1 Magnitude Earthquake

Edgefield County, SC (WLTX) -- Everyone walking into the Edgefield County Huddle House Friday night was talking about the earthquake that hit just hours before.

"The building shook, we thought an 18-wheeler hit us," said Teresa Maroney, a Huddle House employee, describing the earthquake.

Serving hungry customers at the Edgefield Huddle House came to a halt for her after everyone inside felt the earth move.

"It scared the customers we had over there and the people behind us, it scared them and they ran out and they decided to go home," she said.

The 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck around 10:23 Friday night seven miles outside of Edgefield, with people in surrounding state also feeling the tremors.

Edgefield County Hospital CEO Brandon Clary was at home when it hit.

"For me and my wife it was like a freight train, something you've never felt before," he said.

After a week of ice and snow taking its toll on the hospital, Clary immediately called to check on patients, staff and the facility.

Despite rumors of a crack in the floor and a hospital evacuation, Clary says everyone and everything is fine.

"Physical inspection with administration, the State EOC, County EOC, and everything is safe, not even a crack in the paint, which is good," he said.

As for Maroney, she is just glad things were not worse.

"It was a light one, thank God for that and everybody's okay," she said.
