All Students in 2 Districts to Get Free Lunch

Sumter, SC (WLTX) - All students attending two Midlands school districts will receive free lunch and breakfast at school.

Both Sumter School District and Clarendon District Two have been approved for federal funding to offer the food at no cost beginning in the upcoming school year.

The money comes from the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, an amended section of the School Lunch Act.

In order to get the money from the program, the districts had to meet a minimum requirement for the percentage of students certified to receive a free lunch. If that number is high enough--as it was in the case of the two districts--the administration could ask for the federal assistance.

If they go over the amount of money received, the district will have to fund the cost of the food.

Because of the change, parents in the district no longer have to go through the application process for free or reduced lunch.
