Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Students at Brockman Elementary had a chance to step out of the classroom today.
"We are having fun learning about different disabilities, it is called Awareness: The Key to Friendship," said Carol Knight, school counselor at Brockman Elementary.
Fourth and fifth grade students went through 12 stations experiencing learning, hearing, visual and physical disabilities.
"We experienced being in a wheelchair and how it was different," said 5th grade student, Wiley Harbison.
His classmate, Baxter Cleveland Easly, was blindfolded and given different tasks to complete.

"I am using my fingers to feel the brail so I can read with my blindfold on," said Easly.
"They get to discuss and talk about how someone like that would feel but also, we talk to them about how we want to treat someone like that and how actually we all have disabilities," said Knight.
A message the kids understood loud and clear.
"I know a lot of people that have a learning disability and now I can understand what they are like".
"Now when you see someone who has that disability you know how to treat them and help them".
This is the 7th year for the program at Brockman Elementary, the goal of the program is to raise awareness and sensitivity of students about the day-to-day obstacles faced by the disabled.
