Columbia, SC (WLTX)- A Midlands Technical College student transferred to Harvard and recently received her diploma.
"I haven't seen my friends in a while," joked Sara Oswald.
Oswald transferred her two year Midlands Technical College Associate in Arts degree to Harvard, becoming the first student in Midlands Tech history to do so.
The 33 year old Blythewood resident also is the first person in her family to graduate college. Oswald graduated high school and went straight into the work force like the rest of her family. She didn't even think about college until she was laid off from her job at 28 years old.
"It was 2008 or 2009 and my mom mentioned Midlands Tech. and it went from there," said Oswald.
She earned her associates degree from Midlands Tech and was contacted by a Harvard admissions counselor who encouraged her to apply for scholarships.
"I think the thing I will remember most is when I received my acceptance letter to Harvard saying they accepted my entire associates degree and it would all be paid for by Harvard," said Oswald.
Oswald graduated cum laude from Harvard's Extension School with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts. She received Harvard's Dean List Academic Achievement Award for graduating with a G.P.A. greater than 3.5. Oswald says she is not sure what the future holds.
"I'm ready to go on a vacation and as far as work or a career goes I am really open to anything. I hope to stay in South Carolina but wherever I end up I am okay with," said Oswald.
