Sumter School District Names Interim Superintendent

The Sumter School superintendent will retire at the end of the month. That was announced just two hours ago at a special called meeting with the Sumter School District Board of Trustees.

SUMTER, SC (WLTX) - The Sumter School District Board of Trustees has named Dr. Debra Hamm as Interim Superintendent effective August 1.

The announcement was made following a special meeting of school board to discuss naming an interim superintendent and beginning the search for a new one.

This comes one week after Frank Baker announced his retirement as Superintendent, which takes effect next Monday. Baker, who became superintendent in 2013, agreed to retire last week after financial problems within the district, including overspending by 6.2 million dollars in the fiscal 2016 year.

The school board  announced last week they had agreed to a deal for Baker and the district to part ways. Baker will retire at the end of July, less than a month before the school year starts and three years before his contract was due to end.

Hamm, who recently retired from Richland School District Two, has 40 years of service to that district, including the last four years as superintendent.
