Getting 'Behind the Lens' with Gamecocks Photographer

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- He's been the man behind recent posters for Gamecocks athletics, but James Quantz, Jr. just started working with the Gamecocks a few years ago.

For more than 15 years, Quantz, Jr. has been taking photos of celebrities and entertainers, and for the past three years, he's been making photos of Gamecocks.

"First of all, because i'm a fan, Quantz, Jr. said. "It's much more fun to work within a medium that you enjoy being apart of. But it's an extra incentive and an extra feeling of satisfaction when I can create something that the university is proud to show."

His inner-fan came up with recent posters of Gamecocks sports teams, including baseball, the swim and dive team, softball, baseball and this years football poster. He calls it a labor of love.

Wednesday he worked on his latest masterpiece, a production poster of the Volleyball team.

"His method's great," said Sophomore player Sarah Blomgren. "He makes you feel very comfortable in front of the camera."

Quantz said he started working for his high school newspaper, and 25 years later, still looks through his lens with fresh eyes.

"One of my great interests is sports. Another one is entertainment, and so if I can balance my work load with doing entertainment work to doing sports work, than I'm about as happy as I can be professionally," he said.

It only takes a few players to come up with the poster, which was worth about two hours Wednesday.

Women's Basketball Head Coach Dawn Staley stopped by, getting behind the camera and taking a photo.

"I might have to credit her with that billboard, or web-splash page, or wherever it goes up," Quantz, Jr. joked.
