Larry Durant May Have Slipped Through Cracks

Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- A Sumter minister remains free on bond after he was charged by police with sexual assault.

News19 looked at Larry Durant's background and found previous arrests in the 1970's and 1980's. That led us to wonder how someone withthat background become the head of a church.

Legal experts News19 contacted Tuesday said some potential ministers do undergo background checks, though it is unclear as which ones do not because South Carolina state law does not mandate it.

We were told that the Constitution is a barrier to regulating those in religious fields because of language pointing to "the separation of church and state."

State records show Larry Durant was arrested for distributing marijuana, the sale of alcohol to a minor, burglary and grand larceny.

This leaves the decision as to whether or not to hire a minister up to individual churches.
