16 Citations Issued to State House Protesters

Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Sixteen citations were given to protesters who gather on what is known as "Truthful Tuesday."

The group was blocking the entrance to the State House garage and Columbia Police ticketed the supporters of the South Carolina Progressive Network for obstructing traffic. Roseanne Kolberg said their protest is about getting the state to expand medicaid and saving lives.

"For the next three years the federal government is giving 100 percent of the funding, so that everyone in South Carolina who needs it [healthcare] can get it. But, our governor, Nikki Haley, says no," said Kolberg.

Lawmakers have already voted not to accept the medicaid expansion that is a part of the affordable care act.

Doug Mayer, spokesman for Gov. Haley, sent News19 this statement:

"We've seen over the course of the past months that the president's healthcare plan is an unmitigated disaster and Governor Haley, without qualifications, stands by her decision to reject it and its center piece – the expansion of an already broken Medicaid program. Obamacare is wrong for South Carolina and Governor Haley will continue fighting against it while pushing for the state based reforms that will actually improve the health of the people of our state."
