Chapin, SC (WLTX) - Eight members of the same family were laid off from the VC Summer Nuclear Station, impacting three generations.
Sitting on a couch with pictures of her family members on her lap, Melody Morrison McCallie listed off the people who were laid off in her family.
"My father Pappy Morrison, my brother Alex Morrison," she explained. There's her sister's husband Chris, her other sister's son Daryl. "my cousin Mitchell, he worked out there and he supports a small family," she explained. Plus her nephew, Curt.
They all lost their jobs on the same day last week. A total of eight members of the family, three generations.
"That's the part that hurts," said Morrison. Not the part of losing the job, but the part of losing each other.
"My whole family lives here in Chapin, my parents, my grandchildren, my brother, my sister," she said.
This is important because she was recently diagnosed with a generic tumor disorder and she wanted to have her family around for the support.
She was left without health insurance the night of the layoffs. Her father, Pappy. lost his coverage too, just one day after he was discharged from the hospital, a few months after he survived cancer, and two years short of his retirement.
"I didn't quite make it," said Pappy. He has yet to be allowed back on the plant to pick up his medical records, bank information, and Bible.
He says his priority is finding a job to support his family, "I'm going to do everything in my power to take care of them and protect them."
Although they've suffered loss, the Morrison's wealth is measured in family.
"We work together and if someone was in a bind, we worked to help each other," said Morrison. "It's kind of hard to help each other because we all got laid off together."
The family has created a GoFundMe account to help Melody with the medical expenses. If you wish to help, click here.
