3 Killed on I-77 Identified as Claflin University Students

The school confirmed three of their students died and another was injured in a collision Thursday night.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The three people who were killed in a car accident on Interstate 77 Thursday night were all Claflin University students, the school confirmed.

The school issued a statement Friday morning announcing the news. In addition to the three who died, one additional student was injured, and is currently in a trauma unit at the hospital.

"We are hurting and are saddened to hear about the untimely death of three of our students. I call upon the Claflin family to draw closer together and remain strong as we try to comprehend the loss of these members of our Claflin family,” said President Henry N. Tisdale. “Our prayers are also with the families and friends who are connected with the accident victims and with the student who is still in the hospital.”

The school says counseling services are available in Corson Hall and in the Chaplain’s Office. The Chapel will remain open for reflection and prayer. The University will also hold a prayer service Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the students' vehicle crossed the center median near the Killian Road exit, colliding head-on with another car. The driver of that other vehicle was also hospitalized.
