8th Grade History Class Taught With Kyle Carpenter Story

Columbia, SC (WLTX) _ Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter's story captivated the nation but Thursday the story went on a smaller stage and inspired a group of 8th graders at Dutch Fork Middle School.

"I want history to come alive," said 8th grade teacher Lori Wenzinger

Surrounded by legends and hero's who made the cover of past Time magazines, for this lesson the class hears Carpenter's story.

"My grandma talked to me about him," said student EmmaClaire. "I didn't know about him. She said there was this guy who risked his life for our country but I didn't know his name or what his story was."

EmmaClaire was one student who with her classmates decided humility was part of being a leader.

"He tries to leave a good idea for mankind. And he's a hero," said classmate Joseph.

Joseph's group thought about how they could positively impact South Carolina which was a 'focus question' posted on the front board.

"I think they sometimes believe that they can't do great things because it seems so unattainable," Wenzinger said. I want to show them ordinary people who do extraordinary things. I want to show them history isn't just the past but it's happening right now and they're making history. We'll connect that all year long."
