Attorney Gen. Appeals Bobby Harrell Ruling

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has appealed a ruling involving House Speaker Bobby Harrell to the State Supreme Court.

Wilson filed his motion Monday, following through on his promise last week to fight the decision.

Last week, Fifth Circuit Court Judge Casey Manning ruled that the House Ethics Commission, not a state grand jury, had the legal authority to look into ethics claims against Harrell. Manning also ordered the grand jury to stop their work on the case.

The ethics claim had been filed by Ashley Landress of the South Carolina Policy Council, a political group that advocates for smaller government. She said Harrell had abused his position for personal gain for both he and a member of his family.

Harrell has said the attack is politically motivated.

Wilson asked the State Law Enforcement Division to look into the matter, and in January of this year, he referred what he found to the state grand jury.

Despite Manning's ruling, Wilson has said the grand jury will proceed with their probe.

It's not clear when the justices could hear arguments in the case.
