Audit Underway for Columbia Police Foundation

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- News19 has confirmed an audit is taking place for the Columbia Police Foundation.

The Columbia Police Foundation is a non-profit organization that the Columbia Police Department sometimes utilizes for resources it may not have.

It comes after News19 received an email from a person identifying themselves as a "former major" at CPD saying that the foundation is missing funds.

When CPD Chief Skip Holbrook took over the reigns at the CPD, he promised a new era for the department. Now, Holbrook says that's a promise he intends on living up to.

"If we're going to elect to embrace the concept of a police foundation and utilize that foundation and move forward," Holbrook said Tuesday, "I thought it was important, piece of mind wise to start with a clean slate."

The email claims there are $13,000 missing Columbia Police Foundation coffers.

Holbrook also viewed the email, but said the audit is not related to its content.

"This is an example of why it's necessary. There is a fund balance," Holbrook asid.

Beth Carrigg is the Vice President of the Columbia Police Foundation. She, along with a new president, took over in March.

Carrigg said there are about $27,000 on the foundation's books now, and says if there is money missing, she hasn't seen it.

"We welcome an audit," Carrigg said. "We actually closed the bank account from the former administration and moved all the funds to a new bank for the new administration."

Columbia City Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, who also received the email, said she is confident in the new chief.

"I have no concerns and I think (the chief) is taking (the allegations) very seriously and I have the utmost confidence that Chief Holbrook will get to the bottom of it."

Holbrook said he has contacted people within the City of Columbia familiar with financial information to look into the records of the Foundation.

Allegations of missing money and misspending within the Foundation began after Former Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott's resignation.
