BBB Warns Of Illegitimate Contractors

Columbia SC (WLTX) - Summer is the season for home improvements, but are you hiring the right person for the job?

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to do just that, after they recently got a complaint from a Lexington County homeowner.

In a consumer alert from the agency, the BBB says a former employee of All Pro Improvements knocked on the door of the victim. After convincing the resident his home needed work, the BBB says the man made some measurements and received a $2,500 cash deposit.

IThe situation caught Mac Smith, the owner of All-Pro, off-guard, since it wasn't even one of his current employees making these claims.

"We've got many testimonials, we've got over 650 satisfied customers," Smith said. All Pro Improvements has been in the construction and remodeling business since 1997 and said he hasn't received a complaint until now.

"A gentleman called up and wanted to know when his project was supposed to begin and that was my first time of hearing about it," Smith said.

Camp has a couple things to keep in mind when it comes to home improvement work.

"Unfortunately, there are lots of not legitimate businesses, but businesses that are springing up to try and call themselves roofers and taking advantage of consumers, so in this season it's really a result of the storm," Jim Camp with the BBB said.

"Don't be pressured into contracting with someone, don't respond to someone who knocks on your door offering to do business for you or do services for you," Camp said.

Even if a salesperson has a business card or a brochure, always do your homework.

Every contractor must be licensed through the state's Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) agency.

Consumers can go online and make sure the company they're hiring is legit.

"Not only can consumers be taken advantage of, but business owners can be taken advantage of," Camp said.

"If anybody was duped or taken advantage of, I feel like it was myself," Smith said.
