Blythewood Residents Give Input On Road Widening

Blythewood residents discuss road widening

Blythewood, SC (WLTX) - Major road changes are coming to Blythewood and it's all a part of the Richland County Penny Tax Program.

"There's just more traffic then there is space and we've needed these roads widened," Devin Moon said.

Soon residents in Blythewood will see improvements along Blythewood Road from Muller Road to Interstate 77.

A turning lane will be added between Muller Road and Syrup Mill Road and a second lane will be added in both directions from Syrup Mill Road to the interstate.

Moon lives in the Cobblestone subdivision.

At a public meeting Thursday he and other residents were able to give their input on what they want to see

"I liked the A plan because it gave a wider sidewalk. The sidewalk was off of the road. We have a nice scratch strip and the sidewalk was wide enough to bike and walk," he said.

There are 3 options to chose from.

Plan A includes a 10 ft wide shared use path with no bike lane.

Plan B creates a 4 ft wide bike lane, but the shared use path becomes a smaller side walk.

And Plan C keeps the bike lane and the side walk, but gets rid of a grass buffer.

Also proposed is a roundabout at the entrance of Cobblestone and some folks are concerned about it.

"The roundabout really changes the entrance to Cobblestone. Right as you come up to Cobblestone there is this beautiful green entrance area and that would completely get rid of that," he said.

"You know that people come around a roundabout. They get confused. They will dump off into our neighborhood and have to turn around and come out and we expect a lot of traffic on something like that," Babs Kesser said.

Rob Perry is in charge of the roughly $7 million project.

He said they expected the differences in opinion.

"Some folks are for them and some folks are against them, so that's one of the biggest things and another one again is the enhancements, whether they want to have a sidewalk or a multi-use path," Perry said.

The project is expected to begin in 2019.
