Child Playing with Lighter Started Columbia House Fire, Investigators Say

The house suffered $85,000 in damage.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Columbia Fire Department say a child playing with a lighter touched off a blaze that severely damaged a home.

The fire took place Monday afternoon at a home on Willow Hurst Court.

Firefighters say they were able to get the blaze under control quickly, but the fire still caused heavy smoke and water damage to the upper part of the home.

There were no injuries.

Five people--two adults and three children--were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is helping them find a temporary place to stay.

The total damage to the home is estimated at $85,000.
