Air Quality 'Unhealthy' Amid Code Red Alert

Code Red Air Quality Alert in the Midlands Wednesday until Midnight.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has issued an air quality alert in effect until midnight.

A code red alert has been issued Wednesday due to numerous large wildfires in North Carolina which continue to produce large smoke plumes. This is expected to create unhealthy breathing conditions where the smoke is most concentrated.

The smoky conditions can irritate the eyes and respiratory systems as well as aggravate chronic heat and lung diseases. CODE RED means people with breathing problems, such as asthma, especially children and the elderly, should limit outdoor exertion and exposure. Take measures to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside by keeping windows and doors closed.
