Columbia Church Continues To Grow, Feed The Hungry

CHRISTMAS IS THE SEASON OF GIVING AND ONE COLUMBIA CHURCH IS EXPANDING IT'S EFFORTS TO DO JUST THAT.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Christmas is the season of giving and Set Free Ministry is expanding its efforts to do just that.

"Me and my wife, we had to go to churches and we had to go to food banks and get food because we were hungry, Kelvin Jones said.

Jones knows what it's like to need a helping hand. Now, the Pastor of Set Free Ministries in Columbia, his mission is to feed those in need every night of the week.

"Not everybody who is homeless is necessarily hungry, but some have a choice to make: either pay a bill or buy food,
he said.

"If my lights go out I know I've got a meal,
Anthony Augustus said. I can come in and get me a meal. I can make sure I have enough money to get my lights back on."

The ministry is expanding, asking for donations of deli meats, bread, water and fruit to serve lunch, but that's not all. When we first interviewed Jones almost two years ago his ministry had a small clothing program.

"We started and we had maybe two or three racks of clothes and when we looked up we had five, six racks and we had a building full and we (are) renting the next building now and we set it up and it's been a tremendous blessing. I mean people have been giving and giving and giving. We have donations come all of the way from Florida,
said Jones.

They give a lot of those donations away. Dana Gittens needed a suit.

"It took us about 30 minutes to find the right length and everything like that. I felt real good, Gittens said.

Set Free Ministry is located at 6212 Shakespeare Rd. and the church hopes to begin serving lunch on December 4 at 11 a.m.
