Columbia Design Board Approves USC Dorm Plans

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Columbia Design/Development Review Commission has approved the University of South Carolina's plans for a dorm with 878 bedrooms and two parking garages. The West Campus Development Project will go up at 611 and 701 Park Street near the Carolina Coliseum.

USC plans to lease the dorms to Holder Properties, which will pay USC to build, own and operate the dorm for 40 years.

The plans still need approval from the Budget and Control Board at the State House.

According to the plan given to the Design Commission, the project will include 721 parking spaces (57 on-street and 664 garage spaces). 220 bicycle spots will also be provided.

The construction is part of USC's Innovista Master Plan, which expands the campus towards Columbia's Vista area.
