Drug, Prostitution Complaints Leads Hotel to Give Up License

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Columbia motel has agreed to give up its business license after police say they had numerous complaints about crime at the business.

The agency says they recently sent a letter to the owner of Best Way Inn on Two Notch Road that they intended to declare the business a nuisance. The owner then met with CPD officials, and during that meeting, he agreed to give up the license by the end of July 14.

By surrendering the license, that means the business can no longer legally operate. Doing so would be a criminal act.

The police said they told the owner they'd gotten excessive calls for service, narcotics activity, and prostitution which were causing problems in the area. Officers say they responded to 138 calls for service and took 42 incident reports between June of last year and June of this year for complaints ranging shots fired, trespassing, and narcotics.

Police say this is part of a broader effort to improve the Two Notch Road area.

"We are continuing to identify establishments in the Two Notch Road corridor that are negatively impacting the quality of life for the residents of that area, and holding owner/operators of the businesses accountable," Chief Skip Holbrook said.
