Columbia Mayor Wants Front Porch State House

COLUMBIA MAYOR STEVE BENJAMIN IS DEFENDING HIS EFFORT TO BRING A FRONT PORCH VIBE TO THE STATE HOUSE. BENJAMIN'S PROPOSAL WOULD BRING FUN AND GAMES TO THE STATE HOUSE LAWN.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin defends his effort to bring a front porch vibe to the State House.

Benjamin's proposal would bring fun and games to the State House lawn, including beach chairs, hammocks, corn hole and a putting green.

He said the idea it to attract more families to the State House.

"This complex is the state's front porch. This is the people's house and it's symbolic for that very reason. This is about bringing people to their State Capitol, not just people in Columbia, but people across the state," he said.

According to critics, Finlay Park might be a more appropriate venue.

Nothing is a done deal yet. Benjamin's proposal needs Legislative approval to become a reality.
