Columbia Police Chief Picks New Second-in-Command

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - New Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook has selected a second-in-command.

Holbrook announced at a ceremony Tuesday that Melron Kelly will be promoted from major to deputy chief.

Kelly, a Columbia native, has been with the department since 1999. Earlier this year, he served as acting chief between the resignation of Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago and Holbrook taking the job in April.

Kelly will continue to command the Uniform Operations Bureau, which comprises several divisions including the gang unit, the drug suppression team, and the school resource officers.

Holbrook also announced that Kellie Yates will be a captain in the West Region, and that Tim Holbrook will be a captain in the North Region.

These are the first major promotions the chief has announced since taking over the department .
