Community Helps Capture Orangeburg Burglary Suspect

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) Orangeburg County Sheriff Ravenell announced two individuals have been arrested on a burglary charge after a joint effort by investigators and the community.

“This is what happens when we’re able to work together in a single effort to stop crime,” he said. “We may not have information, the community may not. But when it happens, things get done very quickly.”

Daniel Schlask, 34, and Kelly Karzanes, 33, have each been charged with second-degree burglary.

During a hearing in court on Wednesday, bond was set on Schlask at $25,000 surety while Karzanes’ bond was placed at $7,500.

Sheriff investigators were called to a Binnickers Bridge Road residence on Nov. 19 where a man said his deceased mom’s home had been broken into.

The man’s sister said she had seen a male and female in a burgundy vehicle driving around the residence.

With help of the community, investigators were able to identify Schlask and Karzanes as that couple in the burgundy vehicle.

“It’s bad enough this home is being burglarized,” Ravenell said. “But under the circumstances of this being the property of a deceased relative makes it seem just a little worse.”
