Crossing Guard Protects Students From The Cold

Crossing guard gives out coats to kids at Carver-Lyon elementary

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Angela Tobe spends time talking to parents and making sure their kids are safe on the way to Carver-Lyon Elementary School.

"It's been wonderful. The kids are great. The parents are great. I love them so much," said Tobe.

So when it started getting cold in the morning, Tobe used more than love to help keep some of the students warm.

Tobe said, "I decided to just go out and purchase jackets and as the kids come across the crosswalk, I asked them do you have a jacket. no, I'm cold. Well, come to the car, let's see if I have something to fit you. So I've been giving out jackets to kids who don't have jackets."

And it was needed. Tobe says she's given out more than 40 jackets to kids who need them. She keeps the jackets in the backseat of her car. Tobe, who is a mother of four boys, says it takes a village to raise a child.

"I love kids and these children love me and I love them and to see them walk by like that, I'm just doing what I'm supposed to do. You don't have to give birth to a child to be a parent or to love that child," said Tobe.

Allegiance Industries, the company Tobe works for, is also helping by donating jackets. They hope to expand the project to other schools, but for now, Tobe's heart is with the students of Carver-Lyon.

"People look at law enforcement as something bad, something negative, but it's not. They're great people. We're great people and we help," said Tobe.
