Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Several homes in the Mill Village neighborhood of West Columbia were in the process of being demolished, when the project was put on hold Tuesday.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control stopped the demolition over concerns that additional permits were needed. Residents say they have concerns about hazardous material in the homes.
"There's a lot of elderly people in the neighborhood," says Casey Moon. "Small children in the neighborhood...people who cant take care of themselves if there's bad things floating in the air. think about the past when you're thinking about the future. be smart about it."
The City of West Columbia says the contractor is working with DHEC to clear up the confusion.
They city plans on turning the space into additional parking needed to handle traffic associated with recreation on the nearby Congaree River. A city councilman said about five homes were expected to be demolished.
