Deputies Warn of Fake Firefighters Scam

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Authorities are warning the public to beware of a scam involving suspects who are going door-to-door and representing themselves as Greenville County firefighters.

Greenville County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ryan Flood said reports have indicated that the suspects are trying to gain entry into homes by requesting to check the residents' smoke detectors.

In recent incidents, the suspects told residents that they were with the Duncan Chapel or Piedmont Park fire departments, according to Flood.

On at least one instance, the suspects were described as two white males in their mid-20s wearing blue T-shirts and cargo pants, Flood said.

"In all instances, the requests are scams, and it has been confirmed through the Greenville County Fire Chief’s Association that no members of their departments are going door-to-door asking such requests," Flood said in an email.

He said the Sheriff's Office is working alongside the association to investigate the incidents.

Anyone who believes that they have fallen victim to this scam is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
