Columbia, SC (WLTX)- In South Carolina there are 147 Reach Out and Read programs.
Doctors and nurses pass out books to children ages six months to 5 years old during their visit to the doctors office.
"We have the Noisy Egg, Curious George, which is always a favorite," said Dr. Julie Ballance with USC Pediatrics.
According to their website, Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy during routine exams.
"Each child is given a book and the family is spoken to about the importance of literacy and that all children should have books to read and parents should read too," said Dr. Ballance.
She says it is not only important to get the kids reading but also reading to them at a very early age.
"Between the ages of 6 months and 3 years your brain is developing rapidly. If you are exposed to it at that time, you will have much greater success in academics as you grow older," said Dr. Ballance.
