Wrong Way Driver Led to Fatal I-77 Accident, Troopers Say

Investigators now say a truck crossed the median and went into the wrong lanes.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - State troopers say a driver went into the wrong lanes in the moments before a fatal accident on Intestate 77 Friday afternoon.

Troopers released new details in the collision that shut down traffic along a stretch of the road near Columbia.

According to troopers, the collision took place just after 1 p.m. at mile marker 11 in the southbound lanes. That area is between the Fort Jackson Boulevard and Forest Drive exits.

Investigators say the driver of a Toyota was driving south on I-77 while the driver of a pickup was headed north. For some reason, the pickup crossed the median, going into the southbound lanes and striking the Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota, who troopers say wasn't wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The pickup driver went to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

After being completely blocked for almost 90 minutes, traffic slowly started to reopen by mid-afternoon, and completely reopened to traffic by 4:15 p.m.. Drivers had to be redirected due while emergency crews responded to the scene.
