Dylann Roof Competency Hearing to Be Closed to the Public

The hearing will now take place next week.

Charleston, SC (WLTX) - A competency hearing for the man charged in the Charleston church massacre has been delayed and closed to the public.

Judge Richard Gergel issued an order Wednesday to keep the hearing for Dylann Roof private. However, a hearing will be held Thursday to hear objections to his decision.

The hearing is to determine if Roof is capable of standing trial.  It was to have taken place Thursday, but will now happen on Monday, November 21. Jury selection in the trial wouldn't begin until November 28, which is the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Roof is charged with nine counts of murder in the shooting deaths of parishioners at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
