Family Loses Almost Everything After House Fire

A fire ripped through one Columbia home and while it may have destroyed almost everything...the man living inside says he's thankful no one was hurt.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A fire ripped through one Columbia home and while it may have destroyed almost everything, the man living inside said he is thankful no one was hurt.

"This was the kitchen. This is where the fire all started at," Dominique Taylor said.

Taylor said it happened all too fast.

"One of my neighbors ended up coming up to my job as soon as I got there and told me that the house was on fire," he said. "I was cooking and obviously I thought I turned the stove off, but I didn't. I came back home to this."

The inside of their home on Castle Pickney Road was destroyed.

"I've got kids and luckily they weren't home. They were at school and all that, he said.

Taylor has four children: two boys and two girls, all under the age of eight.

"And no one was home, but I was trying to think about my next move, seeing what I was going to do after that," he said.

Taylor is renting the house, but didn't purchase insurance. He said he's grateful for the help he received from his work.

"I had a lot of help thanks to Pasta Fresca. They even gave my children new bags. It was a lot of help though. I really do appreciate them. It made them feel better than it made me feel. They were pretty excited about it, he said.

He admitted that it's tough, but said they've found another place to live.

"The holidays are coming up, so I've got a lot to deal with, so I'm just taking it one day at a time. I really don't have an answer for it, he said.

According to the Columbia Fire Department the exact cause of the is undetermined, but they believe the origin of the fire was in the kitchen.
