Family of Najeer Buggs Continues to Search for Answers in His Death

The mother of a Columbia teenager who was shot and killed two years ago, is still looking for answers. News19's Loren Thomas reports.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) – July 3rd, 2017 marks two years since the death of 14-year-old Najeer Buggs.

"There's not a day that goes by that we don't think about him."

On Monday evening, his family gathered at the intersection of Grand Street and Grand Court, where he was shot and killed.

"Najeer was walking that path” says Jack Logan, founder of Put The Guns Down Now Young People. “Bouncing a basketball and someone chose to shoot that kid approximately right here."

Now his family is honoring his death and remembering that there are still no answers.

"I just want justice,” says Lawanda Buggs, mother of Najeer. "The hardest part of it all is me not having him. He meant a lot to me and my family. That's the hurtful part of it all is that he's no longer here behind someone else's recklessness."

Buggs partnered with Logan’s organization to hold a candlelight vigil for her son.

"The police department needs some help in finding out who killed Najeer Buggs, because his mother, his siblings, all of them want closure and justice for the loss of their loved one,” says Logan.

Right now, the Columbia Police Department continues to question people in the neighborhood at the time of the shooting, but the case is cold.

Buggs says she hopes the person who ended her son's life can one day turn themselves, easing her grief.

"Do what's right,” says Buggs. “Because if your mother had to feel the way I feel, it's not a good thing. It's torture, it's torture."
