FEMA Opens Two Disaster Recovery Centers in Orangeburg

Disaster Recovery centers in Orangeburg

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - Two disaster recovery centers opened in Orangeburg county on Thursday to help people with unmet or outstanding needs following Hurricane Matthew. Sheera and Clifton Yates, residents in Orangeburg, say the hurricane blew down 15 trees around their yard, and three more on top of their house.

"It was a loud thud and it was terrifying," Sheera Yates said, "you could feel the entire house shake. As I looked around, I saw some of the light fixtures drop."

"This whole thing was like a war zone, you could hear the noise, the devastation," Clifton Yates said.

Clifton Yates knows about war zones, serving in the special forces unit of the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970. Clifton is now disabled.

"We couldn't fix that ordinarily, especially since my husband is disabled and retired," Sheera Yates said, "it would be a real strain and we couldn't do it on our own."

The Yates' say they came to the disaster recovery center in Orangeburg to get help.

"Our individual assistance specialists are here to make sure that no need is unmet," said William C. Lindsey, Media Relations Specialist for FEMA.

Lindsey says the centers were made for those who prefer face to face interactions and people with disabilities. The centers provide phones with larger text and caption capabilities, assistive listening devices, materials in Braille, and American Sign Language interpreters.

"If you have any kind of issues with hearing or speech, we've thought of everything that you need here," Lindsey said.

Lindsey says the goal is to make sure everyone who needs assistance has a way to get it.

"We're not losing anyone, we want to be able to have as many resources available so they can expedite their recovery and get back to their way of being," Lindsey said.
