Flags at the State House are at half staff to honor a solider from the Lowcountry who died in Afghanistan.
The soldier, Staff Sgt. Girard Gass Jr. died on Sunday, August 3 in Afghanistan due to a non-combat incident while on patrol, the Defense Department announced.
Staff Sgt. Gass assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died at Jalalabad Air Field Hospital in Afghanistan after the incident in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, according to the DoD release.
Gass was from Lumber Bridge, North Carolina and according to Doug Meyer with the Governor's office he grew up in Huger, S.C.
No further details about the incident or cause of death were included in the release.
