Foster Care Students Turn Adversity Into Accomplishment

Graduating from school is an accomplishment in and of itself...but a group who graduated today did so after overcoming adversity most of us couldn't even imagine.

COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - Graduating from school is an accomplishment in and of itself, but a group who graduated Friday did so after overcoming adversity most of us couldn't even imagine.

South Carolina's Department of Social Services (DSS) held a graduation ceremony for 27 students in their Independent Living Program Friday morning at Seawell's in Columbia.

The Independent Living Program teaches kids in the foster care system ranging in age from 13 to 21 life skills they'll need to someday live independently.

Tywan Bookert, who graduated with the program two years ago and came back to speak to the class, says these students did not let those hardships stop them from achieving greatness.

"I was always told joining the system is people that drop out, you don't do anything, you don't go anywhere in life," Bookert said. "Not only can you come from a broken situation, but you can make the best of it and put all the pieces back together."
