Friends Mourn Deputy Who Died at Daughter's Wedding

It's a heartbreaking story of a family's loss during their daughter's wedding.

YORK, S.C. -- Family and friends are remembering a York County deputy who died of a heart attack at his daughter’s wedding over the weekend, moments after their daddy-daughter dance.

Tim Buchanan, 54, was a detective at the York County Sheriff’s Department.

“Immediately I just fell in love with him,” his coworker and friend Deputy Carson Neely told WCNC Tuesday. “He’s going to be tremendously missed. He’s family.”

Neely says Tim, who he’s known for 18 years, was a great deputy, father and friend with a heart of gold.

“He had this laugh,” Neely smiled. “Everyone knew Tim’s laugh. And when he’d laugh, everything was good.”

Tim died suddenly of a heart attack at his daughter’s wedding in Costa Rica, moments after their daddy-daughter dance ended.

“I thought, at least she has that memory, she has that memory, the family has that,” said his friend Deputy George Weeks. “He was such a loving and caring individual. You never heard 'I can’t' from him, never heard 'I don’t want to do that.' He was a great friend. A friend that can never be replaced.”

And that’s how Tim Buchanan will always be remembered.

“I will never be the man he is,” Neely said, holding back tears. “But I appreciate all the time I had with him.”
